Monday Quick start: 'As Good As New' in SPRMRKT

Brand new second hand furniture... Four years ago, Gummo, i29 and Krimpex joined forces to create a new office for Gummo, furnished entirely with recycled and reclaimed furniture.
Being it a big success i29 now decided to make a range of brand new second hand furniture available for you ... This is as Good as New.

It’s made in exactly the same way as everything in the award-winning office – i29 finds old stuff they like... fix it... cover it with their special blend of solvent-free grey matter and then it’s As Good As New.

The collection can be seen until the end of the year in SPRMRKT in Amsterdam. A shop founded by my former boss lady Nelleke Strijkers who in her own words created a 'high-fashion universe' and the conceptual looking arty vintage furniture mixex perfect in SPRMRKT's style.                [MORE]

Jointed Jewels byAmt

Jointed jewels amalia

One of the nice things about my visit to the NYIGF was meeting dutch designer Alissia Melka-Teichroew in real for the first time ... she and I have been emailing very often during the last couple of years, but meeting her in person adds so much to my love for all her designs.

At the gift fair Alissia showed her latest jewelry collection: Jointed Jewel 'Amalia' Collection

When I saw Alissia wearing one of her very new necklaces I almost ripped it of her shirt :)) .. I think she got the message and was super kind to give it to me as a present at the end of the show ... and I must say whenever I am wearing it I am getting so many compliments ... it is pretty big and so a real eye-catcher you can say and so completely different from all other jewelry! I believe the particular necklace I have is not available for sale yet ... it is the Quilt Maple Pendant and will soon be available through her website. But at Jointed Jewels you can buy any of her other amazing jewelry pieces.

Image above are from the Jointed Jewels 2009 ... it represents a union of new and old, organic and industrial, functional and decorative. At the heart of the collection was  the intention to transform complex and separate elements into a new kind of whole. It started as an exploration of ball joints, commonly found in cars and hip replacements. Alissia had the idea of creating a ball joint -normally assembled with sepa- rate parts- as one single piece. Through the use of selective laser sintering (SLA) she was able to literally make a ball inside a ball.

... yes you read it correct the jewels are 3d printed and you can buy them online here

And yes these images are from products Alissia has designed too ... you see how diverse and talented she is! I love the Strap Collection and the Peasant Collection very much. Although the bench is not in production yet, the smaller milk stools are manufactured and distributed by Y'A Pas Le Feu Au Lac from France.

Alissia is founder and creative director of byAMT Inc, which she in her own words says is a New World-Old World mash-up. The daughter of a French mother and American father, she was born and raised in The Netherlands and for the past 10 years living in NY.

ps. If you are interested in producing any of the product please contact ALissia info@byamt.com

fog linen trays and calendars 2013

Bybjor{necklace above was a present from Bjørke, a ducth friend of Jurianne, who has her own collection by the name of By Bjor}

At the NYIGF I had the pleasure of meeting the two ladies from fog linen work. I am a big fan of this Japanese label. Their collection linens and small home accesoiries are just perfect!

What I didn't know was that often at tradeshows companies sell their items so they don't have to ship them back again home ... the sale started at 12 and I believe at 13 everything in the fog linen booth was sold out,  very lucky I was indeed to get my hands on a couple of trays, some linen tape and the new linen wall calendar by Lota for fog linen work...      [MORE IMAGES]

World Skin Colors by Reineke Otten

Today I start with Reineke Otten and her amazing World Skin Colors carves. The silk scarves are printed digatilly with not just a nice looking patteren. Reineke has studied and interperated data for the last couple of years and litterly spend 4 months working with excel sheets resulting in these patterns.

For a designer working in the field of visual sociology Reineke's goal is to to reveal society’s patterns and orders — and occasionally, to generate beauty by recording and assembling images and information. Each scarve shows a graphic for a particular country ... 200 in total.

"imagine people as color pixels. Flying over the world, you would look down and see . . . what? Our planet is an unstable composition of complexions: through migration, intermarriage, cosmetics, war, trains, planes, and automobiles, the ‘view from above’ of the earth’s skin tones is in a continuous state of evolution."

One day this beautiful looking one-of-a-kind lady came to Reineke to the tuttobene booths at NYIGF and expressed her awe and love for Reinke's scarves ... you can probably imagine who much fun we all had and of course were intrigued by this colorful person.

Turn demographic data into a visual language and then into fashion... World Skin Colors
